What I capture during a PhD defense
Of course, everything is discussed in advance. Feel free to WhatsApp, email, or call me. We’ll go through everything in detail. Let me know your wishes, which attendees are family (so I can pay extra attention to beautiful and emotional moments 😉), and which moments I really shouldn’t miss.
Broadly speaking, these usually include the following elements:
- Preparations with the paranymphs
- The dissertation defense
- The doctoral committee and opponents
- The role of the beadle and the “Hora Est” moment
- The awarding of the doctoral diploma
- Group photos with family, colleagues, and committee members
- Reception, congratulations, and informal moments
A PhD defense is far more than an hour of answering questions. It’s often the small moments in between that turn out to hold the greatest value later on: the healthy nerves beforehand, the relief afterward, the proud looks from family members, and the first congratulations once you can finally call yourself Doctor. Together, they form the complete story of your PhD day, and that’s what I capture.
UvA PhD Photographer Amsterdam
Earning a PhD at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) often means defending your dissertation at one of the most distinctive academic venues in the Netherlands.
Many PhD defenses take place in the historic Agnieten Chapel, located in the heart of Amsterdam. This venue has clear protocols for photographers. The chapel is relatively compact, the lighting changes throughout the day, and the beadle carefully oversees the ceremony.
The changing light can create stunning photographs. On an overcast day the effect is more subtle, but when sunlight streams into the chapel, the results are simply beautiful.
That is exactly why experience with the location is so important. During a PhD defense, you don’t want your photographer searching for the right position. I know where the most important sightlines are and how to capture the key moments without distracting the PhD candidate or the committee. I know my role: to work as unobtrusively as possible while creating the most beautiful images.
The moment the beadle announces “Hora Est” is often the official highlight of the defense. These are exactly the moments that make a professional PhD Photographer Amsterdam report so special, and I make sure I never miss them.
VU Amsterdam PhD Photographer
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) has a very different character from the University of Amsterdam.
Most PhD defenses take place in the Aula of the main building on De Boelelaan. Due to the spacious layout of the hall, the PhD candidate, the doctoral committee, and the audience are positioned further apart than in many historic university buildings.
As a PhD Photographer Amsterdam, this requires a different photographic approach. To capture both the candidate and the committee at their best, a photographer needs to carefully consider positioning, sightlines, and timing in advance.
Thanks to my experience at this venue, I know how to document the entire PhD defense without causing any distraction during the ceremony. I move around quietly, and by working with multiple cameras and lenses, I can quickly switch between close-up portraits and wide shots that capture the atmosphere of the entire occasion.
What PhD Candidates Say About My Work
You can already find several reviews of my photography on Google, but I’d also like to share two here.
Merel
★★★★★
“Cindy had a perfect sense of when to be visible and when to remain in the background. During the PhD defense, we hardly noticed she was there, yet every important moment was beautifully captured.”
Josheen
★★★★★
“The photos capture exactly how the day felt, from the nerves before the defense to the relief afterwards. A treasured reminder of a truly special milestone.”
Why PhD Defense Photography Requires a Specialist
Photographing a PhD defense requires a very different approach than covering a conference or corporate event. Academic ceremonies follow strict protocols, and a photographer’s freedom of movement is often limited. Fortunately, the staff at each venue are always very helpful. Whenever I arrive at a new location, I first ask about the rules and, of course, follow them carefully. I work with a variety of (zoom) lenses, allowing me to capture meaningful moments from a distance without being intrusive.
At many universities, the beadle determines where photographers may stand and when they are allowed to move. At the same time, PhD defenses are often held in historic halls, chapels, and auditoriums where available light is limited. A PhD Photographer Amsterdam therefore needs more than technical expertise. It requires the ability to move discreetly while understanding exactly how an academic ceremony unfolds.
During a defense, I am constantly thinking about timing. When does the doctoral committee enter? Where are the opponents seated? How can I capture the interaction between the PhD candidate and the committee without interrupting the ceremony? That experience is what makes the difference between a standard photo report and a story that truly brings the atmosphere of the day back to life.
I work without flash and use professional cameras and fast lenses to capture every moment beautifully while preserving the natural atmosphere of the venue. This allows me to photograph both the official moments and the spontaneous reactions of family, friends, colleagues, supervisors, and members of the doctoral committee.

Also Available for PhD Defenses in Leiden, Utrecht and Across the Randstad
Although I photograph many PhD defenses in Amsterdam, I also regularly work at universities throughout the Randstad. Every venue has its own atmosphere, traditions, and academic protocols—and that’s exactly what makes every defense unique.
Whether you’re defending your dissertation in Leiden, Utrecht, or anywhere else in the Netherlands, my goal as a PhD Photographer remains the same. I capture not only the official ceremony but everything surrounding it—from the final preparations with your paranymphs and the anticipation beforehand to the first congratulations, the relief, and the joy afterwards.
It is this combination of formal academic moments and genuine personal emotions that makes PhD defense photographyso special to me.
What Does a PhD Photographer Cost?
A standard PhD defense photography session lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. I usually arrive before the ceremony begins, allowing me to capture the final preparations with your paranymphs and the anticipation leading up to your defense. I then photograph the entire PhD defense, focusing on you, the doctoral committee, the opponents, and, of course, the reactions of your family, friends, and colleagues in the audience. I also capture the moment of Hora Est, the presentation of your doctoral diploma, the first congratulations afterwards, and we usually finish with a number of group photos at a beautiful location inside or around the university.

Absolutely. Many PhD candidates choose to have group photos taken afterwards with family, colleagues, supervisors, paranymphs, and members of the doctoral committee.
